How To Take A Vacation When You’re a Caregiver

I got a call a week ago from the daughter of an aging parent. She called because she thought her mom would be able to handle the fact that her family was going on a once-in-a-lifetime biking trip to Europe while her mom stayed home.

The closer the date got to their family leaving, she observed how her mom was actually taking the reality of their trip.

The daughter of the aging adult expressed to me that she was feeling nervous to go on her dream vacation. As soon as she told me this, I knew we needed to visit with her mother soon so we could get a clear understanding of the situation and what it is exactly that her mom needed.

It was also just important for her mom to know who our team is, and who she will be spending time with while her daughter is on her trip.

Along with the daughter, we created an emergency plan in case something did happen while she was away. After just a week of working with this family, she handed us the keys to her mother’s house so we could do all the necessary things required to take care of her mom while she’s off doing something she’s always dreamed of.

In situations like these we offer temporary care, making sure what you care about gets cared for.
