The Importance of Care At Home

A living room with white built-in shelves

During my first few months working with Navigate, I’ve been able to reflect on moving from working at a hospital to caring for people in their homes. Since I’ve made this transition, there have been a couple of instances recently that have really made me realize just how important this care is.

For example, there’s one client that would have ended up in a nursing home due to the frequency of her wound care. Rather than sending her to a nursing home only to receive wound care, we were able to create a plan of care for her that allows her to stay home and receive the proper care delivered by a professional.

In a nursing home, it’s likely her wound care would have been treated by different individuals almost every day. While this might be ‘good enough,’ we believe she deserved better. She deserved to know who was caring for her wounds, and the peace of mind that her wounds were being cared for by a professional who knows her.

There was one day a winter storm hit. It wasn’t safe for her to travel to the wound clinic to receive care. Instead of putting herself in a dangerous situation, we were able to come to her house and provide wound care for her.

The work we do to keep people safe, healthy, and cared for in their homes never fails to amaze me – even when I’m in the middle of it! It’s so rewarding to be able to make such a big impact in their lives.
