How To Talk To Your Parents About a Care Navigator

Taking a deep dive into what’s going on in your loved one’s life and care is essential to making a plan for their care.

Here’s how you can talk to your parents about this:

1) Name the conversation for what it is, uncomfortable.

Say something like “This is going to be uncomfortable for me and it might be for you, too, but I’d really like to talk about a resource I’ve found for both of us.”

2) Tell them you want to support them without controlling them, which is a dynamic you’ve seen with others as their parents age; a dynamic you’d like to avoid. Let them know you want them to remain in the drivers seat of their life, with support.

Say something like “I have found a company that is knowledgeable and supportive of aging and resources surrounding that journey. They can help us make a plan together so your decisions can be informed and wishes protected.”

3) Assure them that your relationship is very important to you. You’re their kid! You cherish them, you are so thankful for them, and you want to maintain this relationship above all else.

Say something like “You mean so much to me. I cherish this relationship deeply. I don’t want it to diminish because we have disagreements about which way to turn as you age. I want to keep our bond. I think having a Care Navigator with Navigate Wellness can really help protect that for us.”

We acknowledge this service is NEEDED and that this conversation with fiercely independent aging parents can be tough.

Our hope is that we can all work together to honor and sustain that ferocity, maintain relationships, and personalize your guidance through the whole aging process.
